Home fire safety visits (HFSV)

An HFSV involves a survey of your home to identify fire risks and provide customised advice on a range of issues including:

  • Information for smokers
  • Candle safety
  • Electrical safety
  • Escape advice
  • Hot fat and kitchen safety
  • Heating safety
  • Smoke alarm advice
  • Before bed routine

Smoke alarms

You are twice as likely to die in a fire at home if you have not got a working smoke alarm.

The London Fire Brigade will fit smoke alarms free of charge for all eligible households and provide information on how to maintain it. The alarms fitted are:

  • Long life - have a 10-year lithium battery.
  • Easy to test - the whole alarm cover acts as a test button.

Smoke alarms for people with disabilities

  • Visual disability - high-visibility alarms can be fitted with a red lid so that they can be seen more easily.
  • Hearing disability - alarms can be fitted that a give a triple warning (alarm, flashing beacon and vibrating pad for use on chairs or under cushions).

Keep your home and family safe from fire

Sixty-five Londoners died in fires in 2005/6 and 1,131 were injured. Most of these deaths and injuries could have been prevented if simple fire precautions had been taken and working smoke alarms were fitted.
